Gerald Callahan

Gerald Weldon Callahan, age 100 of Butler, Missouri died Monday, July 22, 2019 at Adrian Manor in Adrian, Missouri. He was born August 29, 1918 to Joseph Calvin and Mary Jane Cofer Callahan in Johnstown, Missouri.

Gerald grew up in Johnstown where he graduated from High School in 1936. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Force. On December 6, 1969 he was united in marriage to Alta June Underwood. Together there were five children. In his later years, Gerald was a member of the Johnstown Church of Christ before coming to the South Main Street Church of Christ in Butler. He worked for General Motors. Gerald also hauled rock for Ash Grove Aggregates and farmed as well.

Gerald enjoyed camping, taking care of his stock and woodworking. He liked being outdoors and couldn't stand sitting in the house. Often times he would go to the timber and cut wood even if he didn't need wood at the time. Gerald was a kind, honest and helpful Christian man. He led the congregational singing for many years at the church. He was proud of his service to his country, serving 3 years and 6 months of which 27 months overseas. Gerald loved spending time with his children and grandchildren--especially at Christmas.

Gerald is survived by his wife, June Callahan of Butler, Missouri; five children, Gary Callahan and wife Sandy of Liberty, Missouri, Carol Taylor and husband John of Amoret, Missouri, Jay Scott Underwood and Jeannie of Butler, Missouri, Neil Underwood and wife Tammy of Ft. Scott, Kansas and Richard Underwood and wife Donita of Warsaw, Missouri; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Callahan; and three sisters, Monna Eads, Phrone Harness and Faye Vogelsang.

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2019 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. Contributions in lieu of flowers to Fulton Street Church of Christ. Online condolences
