Areta Lucille Schapeler
Areta Lucille Schapeler, age 87 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at Medicalodge in Butler. She was born November 20, 1931 to William John and Polly Phillipine Diehl Fennewald in the family home near Pleasant Gap, Missouri.
Areta, one of two girls, attended Scifers Country School and graduated from Appleton City High School in 1949. On June 20, 1951 she was united in marriage to Earl Schapeler and to this union two children were born. In her early years, Areta stayed with new mothers to help take care of their babies. She also worked for Schlictman Hatchery in Appleton City. Areta was a woman of strong Christian faith, gave herself to the Lord at an early age and attended the Apostic Church and then the Happy Hill Church of God as long as her health allowed.
Areta, also known as “Mammy” loved playing hide and seek with the Ronald Reagan book and she had a hard time finding it. She also enjoyed pushing the granddaughters on the rope swing while running under it. Areta liked to sing “Oh Dear Don’t You Know” to them at bedtime. Melinda and Melissa could still get her to sing it with them while in the nursing home Areta always had a large garden and canned a lot of it for later enjoyment. She had a bread starter and baked homemade bread weekly.
A niece, Judy Schapeler, was a special caregiver for two years before Areta went to Medicalodge for more special care.
Areta is survived by her son, Wayne Schapeler and wife Josephine of Butler, Missouri; one daughter, Janice Schapeler of Butler, Missouri; one sister, Evelyn Dunlap of Butler, Missouri; two granddaughters, Melinda Stahl and husband Heath and Melissa Mehlhaff and husband Dan; nine great-grandchildren, Emm, James and Kristen Stahl, Sadie, Samuel, Ollie, Henry, Caleb and Theodore Mehlhaff; several nieces, nephews and other family and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl Schapeler; and niece Rose Mary Higgins Fels.
