ON THE SQUARE
Fires have been a regular occurrence among Butler’s landmarks through the years. We’ve seen a lot of once-prominent structures succumb to blazes during our six decades of observation.
When I first came to town, the fire station was located in a single-bay two-story building at North Main and Walnut; Rodney Grimm was the Chief of the volunteer firefighters, ready to roll the truck at a moment’s notice. The local Missouri Highway Patrol trooper, when not on the road, could be found at a desk under the stairs, and the town marshal shared the premises, probably with a lockup for miscreants.
